Felt, not seen When thinking about Chinese elements in fashion, most people tend to think of clothing decorated with dragons or peony flowers. However, in Chu's opinion, getting Chinese elements right is more about creating a feeling rather than including any particular decoration. Chu explained that her very first inspirations came from the ink wash paintings of Bada Shanren (Zhu Da), a painter and calligrapher who was active during the late 17th and early 18th centuries. "He knew how to make use of empty space probably more than anyone else," Chu said, adding that she has spent a lot of time studying the ancient artist's works as well as modern art theorists' research about him. "It's all about the beauty of emptiness and blank space, which is the beauty of oriental Zen." Chu explained that the best way to present Chinese beauty is similar to how salt dissolves into water - you can no longer see the salt, but you can taste it. "I've seen too many Chinese designs that emphasize appearance but lack soul. That was what we decided to change when we first started our brand [in 2011]," Chu said. Born and raised in Xi'an, Chu says she was subtly influenced by the history and culture of the city at a young age, although she did not realize just how much until many years later. Spending her childhood visiting museums and art galleries, Chu liked to sketch the figures in some of the Han (202BC -220) and Tang dynasty paintings because she thought they were beautiful. This, she says, is one of the main reasons that many of her designs mimic Han and Tang styles. Chu explained that she also enjoys drawing on elements from the clothing of other dynasties and ethnic minority groups, such as the qipao, about which there is some controversy as to whether it can truly be considered representative Chinese clothing since it was once the traditional dress of the Manchu ethnic group. "Doesn't the qipao look the way it does because Manchu clothes were influenced by the Han ethnic group?" Chu noted. "And even during the Han and Tang dynasties, Middle-eastern characteristic were absorbed into Chinese clothing... We need to look at the inheritance of Chinese fashion with an open mind. It is the result of multi-cultural and multi-ethnic communication." For this same reason, Chu said she does not avoid using more advanced techniques from the West to create her Chinese clothing if these techniques can streamline production and make clothing more affordable for people. Moving forward A well-known name in China, Chu earned more international recognition thanks to the 2014 APEC Summit. During the opening ceremony, heads of state were all dressed in clothing of Chu's design. Yet, Chu said there is still a long road ahead for Chinese designers to make a name for themselves overseas, as international fashion is dominated by Europe. Chu pointed to Japanese designers as a group Chinese designers can learn from "because we have many similarities and differences." Chu said that Japanese designers were able to stand out, in part, due to the economic boom Japan experienced during the 1970s and 1980s. "The domination of a country in fashion industry conversation is directly related to said country's international position," Chu said. She also pointed to the contributions of individual designers. "Designers like Yohji Yamamoto and Rei Kawakubo learned from masters in Europe before they came up with their own Japanese style," Chu noted. She added that they incorporated fresh Asian designs into their clothing, which won the respect of Europeans. On the contrary, Chu said many designers in China have just been focused on copycatting European designs. "We should learn from the innovation of Japanese designers… Although there was some criticism, this later led to discussion and allowed their clothing to become the focus of attention," Chu said. Merging the two is the perfect blend. When I’m shopping, I [am] constantly looking for the nice balance between looking too dressy and looking too dressed down. What do you want to wear to a club when you want to be super fly but you don’t want to be in dress shoes or look like you’re going to a formal event? But you still want to be upscale. I think this line falls right in that space. Where you want to be a cut above but not too high fashion, where it’s not relatable. Recently, you said you want to have 100 businesses by 2019. Explain that. JD: For me, right now it’s been amazing because I’ve just been investing my money and my time into things I am passionate about. Though I want 100 businesses, it’s not a numbers game. I’m really just putting my time and energy into things I think are incredible, and both things I’m interested in myself. [Like] a gym I would want to go to, [the] food I would want to eat, a protein shake I would want to drink, a vodka I would want to drink. Investing in those kinds of things takes the pressure away from me because at the end of the day at least I can use them. How did technology and social media play a part in the creation of the line? JD: Social media is a part of everything that we’re doing. I’m not the biggest social media head on the planet, so I’m not going to sit here and act like I know everything about social media. But you have to get your product out to the people and people are online all the time. You just have to have a social media element to whatever brand you’re trying to do. Why is design so important to life? Antonio Brown: I think it’s so important to life because clothing has the ability to instill confidence and inspire people. That’s what we do through the brand and through the craftsmanship of the clothes that we create together. We design them to inspire people and to make them feel good and lift their spirits. You’re from Miramar, Florida, and of Haitian descent. How did that influence your music? JD: Musically, I guess you can’t escape your influences. It creeps itself into places where I didn’t necessarily intend it to. My accent will pop out of nowhere. A groove will pop out of nowhere. Or a rhythm will pop out of nowhere just because I was raised a certain way. I was raised in an ultra Haitian household and an ultra Haitian family. It’s not like my parents were super Americanized. My parents spoke Creole and French to me. I only learned French first, then I learned English later on. It’s a big part of my life, so, therefore, it just creeps into my music. At what point in your youth did you realize music would be a part of your life? JD: When I was 4 years old. I knew very early on what I wanted to do. I had a couple hiccups and phases where I thought I was going to be a basketball player. I thought I was going to be a doctor. But those things came and went very [quickly]. What is the greatest lesson you’ve learned working in the music industry? JD: The greatest lesson that I’ve learned is to be yourself. When I was coming out into this industry, I was very young. I was trying to find my way. When you’re young and trying to make it by any means necessary, you get lost in the sauce and I definitely did. We're seeing there's a shift to people starting to care about what's in their products." For Vetter and his brothers — Brian Vetter, executive vice president of nonretail sales, and Matt Vetter, executive vice president of operations — opportunities such as Marriott represent the next frontier. "Response has been great, which might lead to other collaborations," said Nina Herrera-Davila, a Marriott spokeswoman, who said the dressing is used on a seasonal dish with ingredients such as spinach, hummus, cucumbers, avocado and olives. "The Courtyard team is extremely happy about the relationship with the local vendor." Tessemae's has invested in equipment that will allow it to produce and package small portions of dressings and condiments, enabling them to be combined with vegetable platters or other items through partnerships with other manufacturers. In addition, Brian Vetter is pursuing customers such as Marriott, Chipotle Mexican Grill, Chick-fil-A, and institutions such as airports, universities and cafeterias. A meeting with a store manager who tried the recipe won Vetter a regional review, then a chance to become a vendor. The retailer has been expanding its Tessemae's offerings, and notified Vetter recently that it plans to sell all 21 products, including dressings and condiments, at its stores throughout North America. Selections of 14 dressings are sold now in all 44 Whole Foods stores in the Mid-Atlantic region. Those stores are working with the company to add its barbecue sauce and mayonnaise by the end of the summer. "We've seen solid, sustainable growth … and have been comfortable growing their lines to all the stores," said Lee Robinson, Whole Foods' dairy and frozen buyer for the Mid-Atlantic. He said the dressing maker often sends people out to do in-store demos, which helps build the brand. "They're great ambassadors for themselves, and they've grown the consumer base by making connections," Robinson said. And they offer an alternative that's not only gluten free, but dairy free, Paleo, vegan, free of genetically modified organisms and has no added sugar, which, he said, "our consumers are interested in, and as a company we like to support." Wegmans plans to start carrying Tessemae's dressings in about a month in all Maryland and Virginia stores along with its refrigerated natural and organic products, though the chain is still deciding which varieties — at least four — to sell. "It has all of the attributes that we know appeal to our customers, but the two that stand out for us are: It's local, fresh [refrigerated], and their flavor profiles are unique and interesting," said Jo Natale, a Wegmans spokeswoman. Another big break for Tessemae's came recently when Kroger agreed to carry eight dressing flavors and roll them out to 2,100 stores. Vetter recalls going to a meeting with Kroger executives earlier this year with a strategy: aiming to get the products in only the highest-volume stores. Typically, he said, retailers judge a products' success based on overall sales, which can be hurt by the sales at lower-volume locations. But instead, he was surprised that Kroger representatives were the ones making the pitch. "They proceeded to sell us on why the country needs our dressings in 95 percent of the Krogers in the country," Vetter said. Doug Baker, vice president of private brands for the Washington-based Food Marketing Institute, said it's not surprising the dressing maker has had a warm reception from so many grocers. "Retailers are looking for companies like Tessemae's," Baker said. "As consumers continue to embrace private brands and trust private brands, that also allows the retailers to innovate." Consumers' tastes are shifting, too, he said. They want to easily understand ingredients, specific health attributes, or unique flavors or varieties. Tessemae's, with headquarters and a plant in Essex, now employs about 150 full- and part-time workers and gets help from the extended family as well. Mom Teresa Vetter contributes as official taste-tester, while their father is director of "good karma." Greg Vetter's wife works on branding, and "everyone else is in a support role," he said. The dynamics of growing a family-run business that prides itself on an unconventional operation could soon be the subject of reality TV, Vetter said. Last summer, he and his brothers were approached by an agency that creates such concepts. The business owners are negotiating with two networks, he said. "It's a matter of everyone coming to the table with an agreed-upon format," then filming a pilot for a show that could start in the fall, said Vetter, who declined to disclose the networks. "The overarching theme is about the Tessemae's story and us trying to change the food world in an unconventional way, and the highs and the lows and all the fun stuff that comes from operating your own brand and manufacturing company.

This year Diwali will fall on Thursday, October 19. What is Diwali? Diwali is a celebration of light and traditionally relates to the legend of Prince Rama and his wife Princess Sita. According to folklore, the pair were banished from their kingdom for 14 years by Rama's stepmother. The couple went to live in the forest not knowing that a feared king with 20 arms and 10 heads lived there. The king, called Ravana, kidnapped the princess, but Sita left a trail of jewellery for Rama to find her. The prince enlisted the help of the monkey king Hanuman to find his beloved wife, with messages sent to all the monkeys in the kingdom and passed on to the bears too. After a long search Rama found Sita and killed Ravana. The couple travelled back to their homeland and everyone lit up oil lamps to guide them along the way and welcome them home. Diwali also honours Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth. How is it celebrated? Fireworks are set off to celebrate the legend and signify the return of the Prince and Princess. People also light traditional earthenware oil lamps which are believed to help guide Lakshmi find her way into people's homes. People will also create rangoli artworks which are patterns created using coloured rice or powder. The most popular pattern is the lotus flower as Lakshmi was often pictured either sitting on one or holding a lotus. Families and friends share sweets, dried fruit and gifts, and many give food and goods to those who are less fortunate and in need.

Swati Rai Twenty five springs after her entry into the fashion world, Payal Jain wants to rediscover herself — according to the times she is in and the person she has come to be. No, it isn’t a coincidence that her latest collection, ‘Forbidden Love’, which was showcased at the FDCI Amazon India Fashion Week Spring/Summer ’18, was all about ‘letting go’. Payal says the talk around fashion has dramatically changed in all these years. “We are living in the age of social media and of fashion influencers, where I still feel ill at ease. However, I do recognise its importance. The premium placed on having a showstopper five years ago has petered off now. To be fair, there’s more to the show than just the ambient and attendant factors — the music, the lights and so on.” The short attention span, memory and the need for instant gratification have altered the scene; luxury fashion is within the reach of the middle class, apart from the fast moving ones, retailed online and made available no sooner than the ramp show is over. The chatter around street style has also increased the eyeballs that the designers’ clothes get off the ramp. Payal calls it democratisation of fashion. “I am open to retailing online as that is the future. In fact, we get a lot of online queries for what people see on Instagram and other such social media.” Not the one to just give lip service to social media hashtags and buzzwords like ‘handloom’ and ‘Made in India’, Payal says, “I wish there was more focus on the weavers.” Making light of her continued association with some villages and their weavers, with whom she creates fabrics and patterns, Payal urges designers to give back to the community behind the scenes and support the craftsmen at the grassroots level. Payal trained in the craft of designing, graduated summa-cum-laude from the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising, San Francisco, California, and is a firm believer in the science of fashion. Art and creativity is intrinsic, she feels, but “there’s no running away from learning about patterns, textures, cutting and draping of the cloth to come out with that perfect garment.” Her design sensibility is a marriage of a western outlook with Indian ethos. Payal, who says less is more for her, loves fluid and clean lines in classy couture and prêt. Her latest collection, she says, is her most innovative and boldest ever. “If you don’t experiment, you become obsolete and jaded,” she says. So, over the last two years, she has played with colours and textures and mixed patterns and designs to her own surprise too. In an age when life is looked through many ‘filters’, her signature design leitmotif is ‘keeping it simple’ and she describes her brand ethos as having ‘a western body with an Indian soul’. This is exactly what she wants her collections to say too. Talking about her latest collection, her most vibrant yet, she shares, ‘The soul of this collection lies in its random, unexpected, bohemian aesthetic. I have allowed myself to wander wherever my imagination took me.
